Edit:  I did NOT go outside to take the picture.  Took it through the bathroom window.  You guys should know me better than to think I was going to stand outside in the near zero temp to take a pic!!  lol

  • Talked to Jeff today.

The travelers are now in Tucson.

They have been there a couple days already, but just today found a place to stay.

They picked the wrong month (lodging-wise) to be there.

The HUGE Gem and Mineral show is going on now, as well as La Fiesta de los Vaqueros---Rodeo week.  Then there is also Spring Training, which is very popular out there.

My niece had planned on staying in Tucson overnight this week, but ended up either not going or returning to Phoenix the same day because there wasn't a motel room to be found!

Jeff found a job for two weeks at a sign company.  Several workers are from Wisconsin.  He starts on Monday.

On their way to Tucson from Why, they stopped and toured Kitt Peak Observatory.

They also walked the Presidio area of downtownTucson (very old), and window shopped at a lot of little stores there.

They hope to get to Old Tucson while there, and Kenny would like to go up to Mt. Lemmon for snowboarding.

I hope they enjoy MY Tucson.  I have lots of wonderful memories of growing up there, and, of course, that is where Ken and I met.  Jeff told us to fly out there while they are there, but Ken doesn't seem to be too interested.  I think he is afraid the snow will miss him!!  lol

    ----------------------------

I'm still hibernating.  Lots of snow lately.  This past weekend my lower back went out of whack.  It is finally getting better, but mornings are still a bit painful for a couple hours.  I haven't had this happen for about 12 yrs!  Bummer!!

Ken was a sweetheart yesterday, the 13th.  He brought me tulips (planted) for Valentine's Day.  He also bought another one and surprised our daughter-in-law in town, and candy for the grands.  All his idea.

Today, the grands stopped in with a yummy chocolate chip cookie bar shaped like a valentine.  It was so pretty. Thanks kids!

That is a dinner-sized plate it is on---BIG!

    Back to the cave!!!

  • An edit to the last entry about the travelers.

Several of you wondered why Why was called Why.

I was curious, too.  So, I looked it up, and found this at  AZCentral.com.

Head south to Why, which used to be called "the Y" because of the fork in the road where State Highways 85 and 86 meet about 130 miles west of Tucson.

"People ended up settling here and we finally got enough for a post office," he says. "So, when they had to name the town, they changed it from the Y to Why. And that's why Why is Why."

  • THE TRAVELERS

Just had a phone call from Jeff.  We started out with an Abbott & Costello routine----remember the one about the baseball game--"Who's on first"??

We were going round and round, and I couldn't make sense of what he was saying, until the "light bulb" went on above me head.  They are by Why, Arizona.  It it a tiny town southeast of Yuma, on the way to Ajo, Az.  They are camping (free) on BLM land again.  They will be visiting Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument today.

Jeff said that Judy is a little happier at Why than at Yuma.  The desert around Why has a little more vegetation and rolling hills than where they were at Yuma---which is very flat and barren, except where the farming is going on.

They will stay there a couple days, and then go on to Tucson.  They plan on staying in Tucson for up to a couple weeks.

I had mentioned that they should check out Sierra Vista after Tucson.  It is at a higher elevation, and wouldn't be as hot in the summer.  It is also a smaller city, which is what they are looking for.  He said someone else had mentioned Sierra Vista, too.  They would like to go to Tombstone, which is not far from there, anyway.  Jeff remembers our going to Tombstone back in the early 70's, when we took our trip to Mexico with friends.

OK, that brings you up to date on them.

    Back to my hibernation!!

  • Remember my niece's husband that I asked all of you to pray for?  He was having serious heart surgery?

Well, he is home for almost a week already.  The surgeon says he was a miracle!  When they opened B. up, the aneurism he had on his heart was the size of a man's fist, and ready to burst.  They replaced his aorta and his valves, too.  Since he was only 36, and very healthy going into the surgery, it really helped----along with all the prayers said on his behalf!

    Thank you all very much!

    ====================

Nothing going on here.  I am in full hibernation mode, except for going to the eye Dr. on Friday.  Was supposed to have my eyes checked last summer already, but kept putting it off.  Went into the office to make the appt., and picked out my new frames already.  Man, are frames getting expensive!!  Especially when I like frames that are a little different.

    ====================

I think that I am going to take a break from Xanga for a while.  Nothing going on, and don't feel much like blogging, either.  Whenever the sun decides to come out for more than a couple hours at a time, or it stops snowing every other day, I might feel differently.

Will read you all in my e-mail subscriptions, but won't comment much.  Still love you all very much!!

    HUGS!!

  • I talked to Jeff last night.

Today the travelers have a new blog up.

    http://eagleswingsfamily.blogspot.com/

They really liked San Diego.  Found out that grandson, Jacob, who just moved to San Jose to go to chiropractic college, wants to live and set up practice in the San Diego area when he graduates in a couple years.

You all seem to be so worried about our leaky windows.  The frost is just on the storm windows.  And we cannot feel any draft from them at all.  The inside windows are perfectly clear.  They just get a little condensation on them (when it is very cold) when I have something cooking on the stove and there is too much humidity in the air.  Our big front windows are thermopane, and they stay completely clear---no frost at all.

Greg comes home from Orlando on Saturday.  Because he is inside almost all day, he hasn't had a lot of chances to enjoy the beautiful weather there.  But he has taken a couple runs in the evening.

  • YES, I'M COLD!!!!

And, I know a great many more of you are cold also.  Yesterday, it started out up near 40, and this morning it was -12 when I got up near 8 a.m.

A couple years ago, I bought Ken a weather station.  Yesterday, I was ready to crown him with it.  Every little bit he would pick it up and say "It is down another 1/10th of a degree (or more)".  Did he think this would make me happy???  Did he think I was even remotely interested??

The only fun thing about the extreme cold is watching the frost on the windows.  As I have mentioned in other years, we have leaky windows, and the storm windows always frost up when it gets extremely cold.  I love to see all the different patterns the frost makes.

Now, on a different note.  Two presents I bought for the house over Christmas:

A new tiffany-style lamp (One of several I have) still dressed with it's Christmas bow.

A half-round hanging in the window.  It measures 12"x24", and fits perfectly in the bottom half of the window.

Do you think I like stained glass???

Maybe I like it because it is so colorful compared to the browns and grays outside now!

    ------------

By the way, I've only gotten about 4 more slide trays scanned in.  If I can find any excuse not to do them, I take it.  Sooooo boring and slow!

  • EDIT

I forgot to mention that our younger son, Greg, is now in Florida.  He is down there for a golfing industry convention .   For those of you who do not know, he is superintendent of a local private golf course.  He has such interesting seminars to attend----usually dealing with turf, bugs, or insect or pesticides---yuck!!! He left a couple days early in order to get together with an old friend who now lives and teaches down there.

So both of my "babies" are down south in "warm country".  Waaaaahhhh!!!  I wanna be with my babies!!!!!!

    -----------------------

    My life is so boring!

Especially during the winter, when I hibernate most of the time.

I talked to "The Travelers" yesterday. (our son with the bus/motorhome, for those of you who don't know)

They are still in Yuma, but will be leaving Sunday after church.

Jeff's boss asked him to stay an extra day, so yesterday was his last day.

Today, they are taking their bus to a bluegrass festival in Yuma.  There is camping on the grounds.  They will enjoy that.

They had planned on going to Tucson next, but have decided to backtrack a bit.

They are going to San Diego for a couple days.  They had originally planned on going there first, but when they left Bakersfield they had to go east in order to avoid storms and winds in the mountains to the south along I5.

They want to go the the SD Zoo, or maybe Sea World, or maybe even both.

I see there is rain forecast for all the southwest, so who knows what they will get to do.

Yesterday was granddaughter Gretta's 14th birthday.  Happy Birthday, Cuppycake!!

She and her brother, Kenny, are finally adapting to living on the bus.  Neither of them were happy about it at first.  They missed their home and friends.

The only problem is that at this time of the year, they are only meeting "old people" at the campgrounds.

While in Yuma, they all did get to visit with my old girlfriend from high school in Tucson.  Nat and her hubby, Pat, live in the house Pat grew up in.  Pat's family are farmers. (Pat and Ken get along very well---both farm boys!) His parents acreage is divided up between him and his siblings.  I believe his siblings run their own acreage, but Pat leases his out.  Yuma is a big farming area.  When we were there almost 4 years ago, they drove us around and showed us the area.  Lots of lettuce and spinach being picked at that time (March).  Dole and other large vegetable processors have plants scattered all over to process the produce and citrus immediately after coming off the fields.  Really interesting. Both Nat and Pat were teachers years ago.  Nat stopped when she had their children.  Pat retired early, and took over the farming when his folks died.  Pat used to have lemon trees, but a "bug" destroyed them, and he plowed them under.  They still have many citrus trees around their house, though, and on winter afternoons,  they sell to the tourists passing by.  When we were there, it was so relaxing sitting out on the front porch, listening to the bees collecting pollen from the very fragrant flowers in the citrus trees.  SO quiet!!

Anyway, Jeff and family left Nat and Pat's with pecans, lemons and other citrus.  They also told Jeff of another camping area just north of them, since Jeff had to leave the current camping spot after two weeks, and they still had a few more nights to stay in the area.

So, that brings you up to date.

This last week I have been "living in the past"!

Bonnie (BLB) got me going on a project I had started about 2 years ago, and had put on the side----scanning old slides into the computer.

If I feel ambitious, I can do two trays a day---40 slides in each tray.  Including the ones I had done long ago, I am on tray #24---out of 60!

When those are done, I can start on all the boxes and boxes of snapshots taken after we stopped taking slides.

    I am working on 1971.

Does that let you know the daunting task ahead of me???????

Will I get it done before I die??????

    Doubt it!!!!!!

  • EDIT

The surgeryis over.  Took a little more than 8 hours.

B is now in ICU on a respirator.

The surgeon said B was a very fortunate fella.  The aneurysm was ready to burst.  They replaced his aorta, and inserted some kind of box--didn't understand that part, and Ken's sis couldn't talk long.  One of the kids started crying and she had to go.

The surgeon said B is young, strong, and otherwise healthy.  They just have to keep watch for infection now.

    That is all I know.

When I hear more, will let you know.

I thank you all so very much for your prayers.  You are such a wonderful and caring bunch here!!

    -----------------------------------

I am asking all of you for prayers today.

Our niece's husband is probably in surgery right now down in Atlanta.

He has had a heart valve problem since he was small.  Had to have them replaced twice when he was younger.  He is now 36.

Last week they just by chance found out he has very serious problems. The Dr. called B a walking time bomb.  Has an aneurysm on his heart, and also needs new valves and surgery on his aortic chamber.

The surgeon has done all three of these surgeries many times before, but never all three at once.  The surgery could take anywhere from 8 to 18 hours, and has a high risk involved.

B and H have two small children.  Ken's sis lives down there,(H's mom),  and she is a wreck over this.  B is taking it very calmly.  He says that if he wakes up from the surgery it will be wonderful.  If he doesn't, he will wake up in Jesus's arms, which is wonderful, too.

As B's sister says, God made it possible to discover the problems by chance, and there must be a reason for that.  He could have collapsed and died any time if it hadn't been found.

We keep praying that the surgery is a success.  Will let you all know whenever we hear anything.  Ken's sis is staying at their home with the children.

Thanks ahead of time for your prayers!
